The War Abroad, The War at Home: What This Means for Us.

Sisters,

There are folks working hard to make our country into their version of “great.” What they’re actually doing is destroying the rule of law, eroding trust in government, and ruining generations of diplomacy and allyship across the globe.

Last week’s State of the Union had the president celebrating what he calls great work. Hard not to roll your eyes. Because while he’s taking victory laps, here’s what’s actually happened to women of color and our communities since January 2025:

🩺 Health & WellnessThe NIH has terminated over 5,100 research grants — including studies on uterine fibroids, which disproportionately affect Black women — stripping billions from health research that directly impacts us.

⚖️ Safety & JusticeImmigrant women fleeing domestic violence are staying in abusive homes rather than risk deportation, with ICE arrests reported outside the shelters and courthouses that survivors once relied on for safety.

🗳️ Civic Engagement & VotingThe SAVE Act would block an estimated 69 million women from voting by requiring proof-of-citizenship documents that match their current legal name — hitting women of color, naturalized citizens, and married women hardest.

💰 Economic Security — Between February and July 2025, Black women lost 319,000 jobs while white women gained 142,000. DOGE-driven federal cuts are largely to blame.

And now we’re at war with Iran — without a vote from Congress.

When folks tell you this war has nothing to do with us, remind them: it never does, until it does. Funding this war will mean severe cuts to the programs many of us depend on — healthcare, housing, and education. Women of color, already more likely to be uninsured, underemployed, and underpaid, will absorb the blow. And when the president says “there will be American casualties most likely,” those casualties won’t be drawn equally from all zip codes. They never are. Black and Brown service members are overrepresented in the enlisted ranks — and underrepresented in the rooms where these decisions get made.

What can you do today?

Call your members of Congress. Whatever was stopping you before — fear, disgust, exhaustion — set it aside. The danger of silence is greater than the discomfort of speaking up.

📞 Script: “Hi, my name is __________ and I’m a constituent calling from [city/zip code]. I’m calling to demand that [Senator/Representative __________] take immediate action to stop the unauthorized U.S. military strikes against Iran. Congress has the power to declare war — not the President alone. I’m asking [Senator/Representative __________] to publicly oppose further military action, support legislation reasserting Congress’s war powers, and demand a return to diplomacy now. Will the Senator/Representative take action?”

Then leave your name, phone number, and zip code. 📞 Find your members of Congress HERE or call 1-202-224-3121.

They are counting on our silence. Let’s make sure they don’t get it.
