Protect Our Vote – RESIST the SAVE Act!

Sisters,
Every single day, the dark side does something to undermine our democracy. Last week, they took aim at our right to vote. One person, one vote is a fundamental aspect of a thriving democracy, and last week, the U.S. House of Representatives took a significant step in the wrong direction regarding our right to vote.

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act or “SAVE Act” does anything but save the right to vote. The SAVE Act may sound harmless—but make no mistake, it’s a dangerous voter suppression bill designed to silence millions of us, especially women of color, young people, and low-income communities.
If passed, the SAVE Act would require voters to provide citizenship documents—like a passport or birth certificate—every time they register or update their registration. But here’s the truth: only 48 out of 100 people in the U.S. even have a passport. That leaves more than half the country at risk of being shut out of the democratic process.
And the ripple effects don’t stop there:
- Some people in rural areas might have to drive over 200 miles to register in person.
- Over 60 million women who changed their names when they got married or divorced could run into problems.
- Trans and nonbinary people might be turned away if their name or gender on documents doesn’t match.
- Many students and young voters don’t have the right papers yet and may lose their chance to vote.
- If online registration goes away, people without cars, time off work, or nearby offices may not be able to register at all.

But the SAVE Act doesn’t just hurt individuals. It threatens the very infrastructure that communities of color have built to empower our voices.
This bill would gut the ability of local organizations to run voter registration drives—one of the most effective tools we have to engage new voters. Instead of being able to help someone register on the spot with a simple form or tablet, we’d be forced to turn people away unless they had government-issued proof of citizenship on hand. This would crush voter registration efforts in schools, churches, barber shops, community centers, and campuses across the country.
It would also make it nearly impossible to run large-scale Get Out the Vote (GOTV) drives that rely on flexibility, speed, and accessibility. The SAVE Act creates bureaucratic walls to block the very people who most need a say in the systems affecting their lives.
This bill is not about security. It’s about shutting us down. And we can’t let that happen.
