Don’t Make It Harder to Vote!

Sisters,

Today’s Mobilize Monday is an URGENT CALL TO ACTION! Urgent like DO IT NOW!

The forces that want to prevent us from voting are at it again! An outside group submitted a petition to the Election Assistance Commission (EAC) requesting that it create a regulation requiring anyone who uses the federal voter registration form to provide proof of citizenship. This means that if you want to register to vote, you will need a hard-copy, certified birth certificate or passport—something almost 21 million Americans do not have access to.

WE CAN submit comments by 11:59pm TONIGHT (October 20) telling them NO on this proposal.

You can use your own words or copy and paste one of the examples below. Your comments can be anonymous!

  • I’m a Black/Latina/Indigenous/Asian woman who’s voted for years — but I don’t have the ID this rule demands. This isn’t about fraud. It’s about shutting us out.
  • As a working mom of color, I can’t afford time or money to chase documents. This rule targets women like me — don’t call it security when it’s suppression.
  • Women of color already face the hardest road to the ballot. This rule doesn’t stop fraud — it stops us.

When an agency receives a request like this, they are required to give the public—you and me—an opportunity to comment to let them know how a new rule/regulation will impact us. Sisters, don’t sleep on this one. This sounds like a simple change, but it WILL MAKE IT HARDER for women of color to register to vote. Basically, another voter suppression tactic!

In solidarity,

The WE CAN Team
