Enough Talk. Do Your Job!

Dear Sisters,

We have one job this week: Let Congress know that we expect them to get to work.

Today marks the longest shutdown of our government—a shameful milestone in a nation built on the promise of democracy and shared responsibility. Some legislators stand before cameras, declaring they’re ready to work for the American people. Others quietly show up each day, trying to move policies forward despite the gridlock. But words and appearances are not enough. Action is what matters.

Meanwhile, millions of families woke up to the heartbreaking news that their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits—formerly known as food stamps—will be cut or delayed. These are not just numbers on a spreadsheet. These are mothers deciding between groceries and gas. Grandparents stretching a bag of rice to last the week. Children wondering why the pantry is empty in the richest country in the world.

It is a damn shame—and a moral failure—that elected officials are using the most vulnerable among us as pawns in a wicked game of politics, robbing the poor to reward the powerful. We know better. We are better.

So today—and every day this week—pick up your phone. Call your senators. Call your representatives. Let them know that we see them, and that we expect them to do their jobs. Tell them that women, mothers, workers, and voters are watching—and we will not forget who stood up for families and who looked away.

Together, we can remind Congress that governing is not optional. Feeding families is not negotiable. Dignity is not up for debate.

Let’s make some noise, Sisters. Let’s make them work for us.

In solidarity,

Stephanie, WE CAN Founder
