60th Anniversary ~ March on Washington!
Dear Sisters,
WE CAN looks forward to seeing you tomorrow at the 60th Anniversary of the March on Washington!
At this very challenging time for our nation, with a former President indicted for multiple crimes, a divided Congress, and white supremacy raging nationwide with renewed energy, coming together is CRITICAL!
Please join us in signaling loudly that we won’t go back! We will not allow this country to return to the pre-Civil Rights era. WE CAN and we MUST ramp up our individual and collective efforts to get out the vote to elect folks who will support us and pass laws that will protect us.
March organizers remind us that this march is “…not a commemoration, but a continuation” of the important work of fighting for freedom, justice, and equity.
It’s interesting that August 26th is also Women’s Equality Day. The Constitution was amended in 1920, and this hard-fought victory gave white women the right to vote. Even though women of color were on the front lines of the suffragist movement, most weren’t even considered American citizens in 1920 and were not allowed to vote. And, of course, it wasn’t until the 1965 Voting Rights Act that all women had the right to vote.
There is much to celebrate tomorrow, and let it remind us how much more we MUST do to realize Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream for America.
See you tomorrow!
In solidarity,
Stephanie McGencey, WE CAN Founder
